“Damn!”

Lois’ fingernail broke off on the fuse switch with a painful snap, and she shoved the finger into her mouth.  Sucking on it, she tried to balance the flashlight with one hand while she tried another switch... and the flashlight tumbled to the floor.  Lois let loose a string of choice obscenities, kicking at the flashlight for good measure.  She didn’t have much hope for the other switches anyway – it looked like they, and probably the whole neighborhood, were out of power for the time being.

She scrabbled around one-handed for the flashlight, whose beam had gone out in the fall, grumbling and cursing. She found it without too much trouble, but after a few clicks of the switch, it was obvious that it had been damaged in the fall.  Who has the time to make sure the flashlights are working? she complained inwardly.  Especially when your husband is so handy with seeing in the dark? Still sucking on her finger, she groped blindly across the basement floor to the stairs.

Before she was able to reach the banister, her cell phone went off – in her purse upstairs.  Lois startled enough to trip over a storage box, and grabbed for any handhold...  Thump. She hit the concrete floor, smack on her rear.  “&^%$!!”

By the time she stumbled up to the kitchen, the caller had long since left a message.  “Lois?” Clark asked with amusement, touched with worry.  “You were absolutely cursing up a blue streak. But other than that, your pulse and breathing seem normal... just wanted to check on you... I’m not sure how much longer I’ll be, so if you really need something, just, you know... Love you, bye.”

Lois held the phone out from her body and stared at the ‘Unavailable No.’ on the missed call display.  It was the only light in the kitchen except the moonlight coming in the window.  She didn’t need to think long about whether to call him.  So the power was out – as annoying as that was, it wasn’t as if Superman could greatly speed up the repair process.  Especially not if it meant leaving the scene of a rescue.  “I’m fine, Clark, it’s just a power outage,” she spoke to the phone, still holding it away from her.  “And so is Jason, even if Richard’s place is affected by this, too.”  He’ll probably be in better shape than I will, she thought with a smirk. She shut the phone as if she were actually ending a call.  Lois never called Clark on the cell phone unless she’d already tried the yelling method with no results – it was too risky.  If Superman were seen receiving a phone call?  She shuddered to think what the TV talk show pundits would think about that.

Soon the living room and kitchen were filled with a dozen candle flames and the oddly-mixed aromas of pine, vanilla, spice and freesia.  She had a cabinet that she stuffed the damned things into whenever she received one as a gift.  This was the only thing they were good for... that and candle-lit baths...

She shivered. At first it was at the thought of warm skin, soap bubbles sliding across sculptured muscles... then she shivered again.  And it wasn’t a frisson of desire this time, but of cold.  Of course, the heater was out along with the lights.

Lois grabbed a pillar candle, stomped up the stairs (she told herself it would get the blood pumping) and yanked out a couple of sweatshirts and sweatpants.  She was able to get a couple layers on, with one of Clark’s sweaters thrown over the top.  Then she headed downstairs again...

To do what? The laptop would run out of juice within a couple hours, and with the wireless router and modem down, what was the point?  There was not much light to read or write longhand, either - why strain her eyes unnecessarily?  With a huff, she stomped back down the stairs and blew out everything but her own candle. It was past eight o-clock. Might as well load up on the blankets and just go to bed. The power would probably come on in a couple of hours, and with it, the heat.

Lois decided that 4 blankets – cotton, wool, fleece, and the bedspread – would be enough.  Usually they slept under a light blanket or none at all, due to the fact that Clark wasn’t affected by heat or cold in the slightest... and she had her own personal bed warmer most nights.  For several minutes, Lois stared straight up at the ceiling, wrapped in her cocoon of layers.  She had learned to go to sleep without someone in bed beside her, but it didn’t mean it was easy.  She missed Clark’s low, steady breathing and radiating warmth even more than normal tonight.

She tried to imagine that Clark were beside her right now – his arms wrapped around her, cradling her against him as she sank into his embrace.  He was never too warm for her, he enveloped her in this almost perfect bubble of comfort.  It was an incredible sensation, and never failed to help her sleep like a baby. At least when she actually wanted to sleep...

Her eyes fluttered closed, and she curled to the side, soon drifting into a hazy half-asleep dream state.  She imagined Clark’s body pressed against hers, his hands stroking down her sides with gentle caresses.  He would bury his head in the back of her neck, and pull her as close as possible.  Lois would shift her hips until they had settled into the crook of his own hips, and he would murmur sweet nothings.  “Lois,” he would say, kissing the delicate skin below her ear. “I love you...” The tickle of his breath would send shivers down her spine, and she would smile contentedly.

Even now, she could almost feel his body conforming to hers, his palm snaking below her many layers to splay against her stomach. She groaned with the feeling of it, the sheer pleasure of his imaginary touch.  In her imaginings, he felt completely real.  She started to shove back the covers in her sleep...

A hand gently peeled back all of the top layers of blankets, tucking the light cotton blanket back around her shoulders.  Very lightly, Clark ran a light beam of heat vision over her body. His wife immediately relaxed further into his arms, murmuring incoherent thanks.  With another light kiss, he closed his eyes and joined her in slumber.

Original prompt: “Could I get an SR Clois cuddle fic? You can come up with the scenario, but there has to be cuddling involved. Lotsa warmth and stuff. Heck, you could even put it in Déjà-verse if you wanted to. Whatever you want, but with cuddling.” All but the steamy paragraphs were beta'd by van_el – who was unable to check them for typos. :D So mark_clark stepped in to help, too! *hugs them both*

Is your birthday soon? Request a ficlet!

*claps hysterically* YAY CUDDLING! XD

I gotta say, I wondered how 'cuddly' you could get with under 1500 words, but once again, you've managed to blow me away with so much in so little!

She hit the concrete floor, smack on her rear. “&^%$!!”

I died here. I could imagine this little BEEP! with Lois' cuss word of choice. XD

Lois?” Clark asked with amusement, touched with worry. “You were absolutely cursing up a blue streak. But other than that, your pulse and breathing seem normal... just wanted to check on you... I’m not sure how much longer I’ll be, so if you really need something, just, you know... Love you, bye.

You know I love the "listening to the heartbeat" element. *sighs*

She shivered. At first it was at the thought of warm skin, soap bubbles sliding across sculptured muscles... then she shivered again.

*points and sqeals* Wet!Clark! Oh, how I've missed thee! Now I KNOW I'm loved! XD

He was never too warm for her, he enveloped her in this almost perfect bubble of comfort. It was an incredible sensation, and never failed to help her sleep like a baby.

Aww... the overgrown space-heater has a comfort level! ;)

The entire ending - Lois imagining his presence and Clark showing up in the end - was pure cuddly love. The warmth in my room sure ain't hard to find now! *sighs happily* Wonderful cuddle-porn, Barb! Thank you so much! :D

Well, you know I thought about putting an actual curse word in there, but I was writing it for you, so I thought you'd appreciate the beepage. :)

There is just not enough Wet!Clark anymore, is there? *makes a note to find more reasons to do it* I'm happy that this met the cuddle-quotient for the day! Happy Birthday!

Oh, that was splendid, especially when you had Lois trying to come up with what she could do to stay warm. Perfect happy ending, of course!

Lois is nothing if not a practical sort -- I would probably have cursed and whined a little more than she did... :D Thanks for reviewing!

Haha!! This was cute and sweet. ^_^ Frustrated Lois is always awesome, and I love the imaginary phone conversation, since he could hear her anyway. :p

And awwwww.... for Clark coming in and warming her up. ^_^ Think I may have to get in some snuggles with my own hubby tonight. ^_~

That's so gentle, and hot at the same time. :D

There was a time where I didn't care at all for SR, but with all those amazing fanfics I grew to be somewhat fond of it lol.

Oo, thanks! Just what I was going for. :D

There are definitely lots of views on SR - a very good friend of mine really hates it, yet he puts up with my scads of fanfic with a grimace. He wishes that SR's legion of fanficcers would quietly fade away... lol.

But there isn't a version of the Superman mythos I haven't liked since the Donner movies. (And I enjoy watching the older adaptations, too, though I haven't seen enough to comment much). I like all of them a lot, even with their problems -- Donner/Lester movies, Lois and Clark:TNAOS, DCAU animation, Smallville and SR. I will probably go see the Justice League movie if it ever gets made, too.

And really, when it comes down to it, it was SR that got me into DC comics (I had already been into Marvel by then). I don't know, there's something about the we-had-a-relationship-that-produced-a-gorgeous-and-precocious-superpowered-child-but-you-don't-remember-or know-about-my-secret-identity-plus-the-added-yummy-of-James-Marsden-playing-the-other-point-of-the-love-triangle... *sigh*

So when you say "all those amazing fanfics" -- have you read more of my SR stuff, and if not, which authors do you enjoy most? I pretty much know everyone who writes SR on LJ, they are my *squishies*.

Sorry for the fangirling. :D

lol That's what friends are for. They sometimes hate the things we like, and put up with it anyway. :p

Same here, I'd watch any Superman story that I could. :D But for the movie versions, I've yet to find that I really like instantly with the initial viewing. I thought Superman: Doomsday would be the first, but it still didn't do it for me.

*sigh*

I've always loved knowing how people got into comics. :D For me, it's because of Smallville. SR isn't really that bad, I do think it has potential but Singer really should have rebooted the franchise like Batman Begins did, instead of going with the pre-Crisis route. And I genuinely like Richard and Jason. :D

So when you say "all those amazing fanfics" -- have you read more of my SR stuff, and if not, which authors do you enjoy most? I pretty much know everyone who writes SR on LJ, they are my *squishies*.

This is the first SR fic I've read on your LJ, but I'm definitely going to check out the rest after the finals. :D I hang out a lot at Divine Intervention, and there are some authors there who often write fantastic SR fics or crossovers with Smallville. One of them is Nadia aka Nautica7mk, who's the webmaster of the Happy Ending website. I don't know if she has an LJ though.

Sorry for the fangirling. :D

Nothing to be sorry for, I go fangirl all the time too. :p

Yay, you'll read more! I'm happy. ♥

I hung out on DI for about a year and a half -- even posted the first year's worth of my SR stuff on the Alterna-Clois board. But I fell away, because I don't like the boards format, and it was too hard to keep up! I do think it's the home of the best Clois fanfic around, though, so whenever I need a fix, I visit there.

I know Nadia (she has an LJ, but she pretty much only uses it to comment these days) - I actually betaed several of her SR stories (Unmasked, Truth, etc.) She's awesome. The other person I know somewhat well is mizhellfire (Chick Flick). But otherwise, I'm really out of touch! :D

Aww, sweet! Who needs a blanket when you have Superman to warm your bed?! Nothing wrong with a little imagination, huh, Lois! Wow, it’s like she conjured him up or he could read her mind or something..! Humm, I like to think so, and there he is!

I loved it, thanks, Barb!:D

Warmth
I was reading this while a storm raged outside with hurricane wind gusts that blew part of the fence down. I was afraid that I would lose power just like Lois. I can understand her frustration and need for warmth. I curled up in my bed to keep warm and took a long nap. How nice to have Clark crawl in bed with her after warming her with his x-ray vision. Aaahh. A dream come true, literally.

Re: Warmth
Ooh, I'm feeling pretty cold myself! I could use a little of that warmth... And the fence! Is that going to be a big pain to fix?

Anyway, I have a ton more of these little stories... mostly cute or funny or reflective. Want more links?

Aw, this is a sweet image at the end. I really enjoyed Lois's annoyance at finding herself without power--it really is a frustrating and alarming experience!

Mmmm, I remember the sexiness of heat vision in Deja Vu and am happy to see it again. It's a wonderful trope.

Being without power is really annoying -- and when you have a superpowered husband who could do something about it, if he were only there... more annoying, still.

The heat vision is probably my second favorite sexy power, after super-hearing her heartbeat anywhere in the world. ♥
