Chapter 12: Loose Ends

Peter kicked himself mentally all the way to the mansion. How stupid could I be? I wanted to believe Harry had forgiven me so badly, that I totally ignored the buzzing in my head! It bothered him greatly that he had gotten himself in trouble twice in quick succession – and all because he had dismissed the warnings. And Mary Jane has been caught in the middle both times. If Harry has touched her...

He stopped a couple of buildings away, clinging to the edge. Clambering around the side, he peered at the mansion gates. The sun was just setting, and there didn’t seem to be any news crews out today… the story was blowing over, since no one had come forward to prove the photos were real. Better safe than sorry. He swung quickly to the building opposite, and used his enhanced senses to feel for danger. All clear.

Peter alighted on the balcony. Tearing off his mask, and returning to regular clothing from his makeshift web-pack, he pushed violently through the French doors.

At his abrupt entrance, Harry and Mary Jane both looked up, blinking in momentary surprise. The two were sitting together at a table talking. “Peter!” MJ exclaimed, happy to see him after his hospital errand.

“Hey, why didn’t you call for a car, Pete?” Harry asked.

Peter didn’t answer – he simply stalked up to Harry and grabbed him by the shirt collar. “Is this how it is always going to be between us?” he said in a low, menacing voice.

Mary Jane appeared beside him, voice thick with alarm. “What is going on?”

“What are you talking about, Pete?” Harry croaked.

It seemed like such an innocent question, but the tingling had grown ever stronger since he had arrived at the mansion. His spider-sense had been strongly warning him about Harry all along, but he had been attributing the feeling to anything but the source. This time, he would not ignore it. He lifted Harry into the air by his shirt, and powered him toward the wall. The back of Harry’s head struck the brocaded wallpaper with a thunk. “Don’t pretend anymore, Harry. Vogel told me about the call. Will you always send others to do your dirty work?”

In an instant, Harry’s expression turned from frightened confusion to malice. “Not all of us have superpowers, Pete. Will you murder me like you did my father?”

Harry’s words stung, and Peter released him. “I didn’t kill him, Harry! He tried to run me through with the glider, and I jumped out of the way. He doomed himself!” Peter retorted.

Harry rubbed at his throat, growling, “Or so you say. How can I trust a word you speak, when you have been lying to me for years?!”

“What’s this about?” Mary Jane cut in, terrified. “What happened with Vogel? I’m not going to stand here and watch my two best friends rip each other to shreds!”

Peter placed an arm protectively in front of her, and explained angrily, “He called Vogel to try to trap me into revealing my identity. Vogel was shot trying to get Spider-Man to show up.” He turned his blast of anger fully on Harry. “Once again, you almost cost a man his life! Is your misguided revenge worth the harm you’ll do to others?”

“And how many have died for the sake of your ‘justice?’” Harry spat. “My father… Octavius… all the innocents that got caught in the crossfire?”

“How dare you compare him to those madmen!” Mary Jane exploded. “I’ve told you before – countless people have been saved through his actions. Imagine how many more would be dead if not for Peter! Myself included!”

He faced them with a steely gaze. “I will never forgive you. Freak. Murderer. If it weren’t for the things you know...”

“Looks like we’re at an impasse.” Peter’s tone turned even more deadly serious. “If you so much as think of bothering us, Aunt May, anyone, I’ll find out.” He started to lead Mary Jane toward the balcony. “You won’t win this war. Be sure of it!” Peter lifted Mary Jane into his arms. With a final look of warning, he dropped over the edge, leaving Harry to stew alone.

Once they were far enough away, Peter brought them to the pavement. His shoulders crumpled, and a sob tore from him. Mary Jane led him to a bus bench, just a few yards away, and put her gentle arms around him. They cried together until the moon was high in the sky.

It was good to be back home again. Mary Jane had finally listened to all the messages on their machine. Some were from friends, others family, and of course, the press. She made a point to call everyone (except the press) and check in. Most seemed embarrassed that they had believed the press for even a moment. She graciously accepted their apologies with a secret smile on her lips.

Peter was out again, but he had made an odd request earlier. “Meet me at the Moondance for dinner tonight. You can flaunt your new success to Enrique.”

It was time to go now, actually. She gathered her jacket, purse and keys, and left the apartment. After a short cab ride, she was once again happily surprised to find him waiting for her. “Well, will wonders never cease,” she teased.

“I amaze myself sometimes,” he responded, and kissed her hello. Inside, they had a nice conversation, even if the food was a little greasy.

Enrique even came over to the table and chatted politely with them. “I knew you’d be a star someday,” he stated proudly as they paid their check.

“Yeah, right,” Mary Jane muttered, for Peter’s ears only, once they were outside. “That’s why he treated me so well before.”

She started to flag a taxi, but Peter lowered her arm. “Let’s take a walk, MJ. It’s a nice night, and I don’t have anywhere to be right now.”

“Sure.” They headed the way she used to walk home after a day of waitressing. That’s a time in my life I certainly don’t miss. Peter slipped his hand into hers, and they strolled along the nighttime streets for a good distance, companionably silent. Suddenly, he turned a corner, pulling her along with him.

He stopped in the shadows of the dark little street. “MJ, turn around for a minute. I have a surprise for you.”

She turned around, amused. Behind her, she could hear the familiar thwip, thwip sound of his webbing being spun. What is he doing? As she waited, she looked at the buildings around her. It looked so familiar somehow...

“Okay,” his voice sounded a bit distant. “Now you can turn around.” She complied.

Before her was a large web, spanning the wall below a fire escape. In the center was a note and a jewelry box. Peter had disappeared. She stepped over, and plucked the note from the center. Look inside the box, the note read. Excitedly, she opened it to reveal a beautiful ring, and another note: Will you marry me?

Peter descended from above, upside down. “Well?” he asked aloud.

An overwhelming sense of déjà vu caused her to realize their location. He had brought her to the exact spot where they’d shared their first kiss. Just as before, she placed her hands on the sides of his face and kissed him passionately. Mary Jane found it difficult to believe, but it was fantastically better than the previous time. Arousal coursed through her, all the way to the tips of her fingers and toes. When it ended, she touched her forehead to his and breathed heavily. “Did that answer your question?”

In one quick motion, she found his arm around her waist, and they soared to the rooftop. Setting her down gently, he took the box from her hands. He retrieved the ring inside and placed it on her finger. “Mary Jane Watson, I will love you forever.”

“Me too, Tiger.” She slipped her arms around his waist and pulled him close. “Is anyone watching?” she whispered huskily.

“I can’t sense anyone,” he answered after a moment.

A mischievous smile played across her features. “I’ve always wanted to make love by moonlight. Could you, you know...”

He smiled in return, and began creating a web hammock of sorts in the corner. When it was finished, she pushed him down onto it and proceeded to show him just how much she loved him.

Harry poured himself another glass of scotch and downed it. There is no justice for us Osborns, Harry, the voice chided. We have to create our own.

“I was so close, father. If his identity had been revealed, he could have been tried and convicted for your murder. Not to mention the civil suits he’d face by the dozen.”

Yes, for him to rot in jail, penniless, among those he had helped put in jail himself, would have been delicious irony. The voice turned nasty. But he outsmarted you, my boy, and he’ll keep doing it. He’ll be right: ‘You won’t win this.’ Unless...

Harry opened the drawer of the desk, where a small locked box rested inside. He removed and unlocked it, then lifted the lid. Picking up the vial of green fluid, he turned it over in his hands. Setting his mouth in a grim line, Harry made his decision.

This trilogy concludes with the final chapter, Best Wishes.

Peter's confrontation scene with Harry, I don't know if I want to laugh or cry for Harry there. He's down a dark road. (Though, don't know if I liked the fic ending on Harry's note, but I'm glad you didn't have him laughing... goblin like)

Gotta do my own little confrontation with Peter and Harry in Brother, and of course the Peter/MJ fluff.

As for Peter and MJ, I loved it, I had all bit forgot Peter wanted to ask MJ to marry him! Seriously. (Hope I don't forget during the movie, lol!) The web hammock, cool, darn it, wish I thought of something like that. Wonderful work as always, Barb. Can't wait to read Best Wishes!

No laughter! Dang it, I knew I forgot something... ;) JK. I look forward to your version of the confrontation, so write it, girl!

LOL - yeah, that was ostensibly what the fic was about, right? Peter asking MJ? But he gets side-tracked: that's the other half of the summary.

You remember how I reacted when I saw the first pics of Peter and MJ on the web hammock in the SM3 promos? I about wet my pants. They did my idea!

Oh yeah - you were the ECQ looooooong before DV. Just thought I'd note that. ; )

So... Peter confonts Harry, Harry is his typical You killed my father, you jerk! self, Peter gets MJ out of there, Harry becomes... broody... Peter FINALLY asks MJ to marry him, and Harry reveals that he has more in mind than Peter thinks he does. Of course he does. What's that old saying? Revenge is a dish best served cold?

A few days, eh? Bring it on! The trilogy is nearly complete, and the day is almost here!

Who me? ECQ long ago? *evil grin* But you have to admit I wasn't AS evil back then. It wasn't every single chapter in these fics.

A lot does happen in this last one, doesn't it? But I'm really glad I went this way with Harry, since SM3 is doing the same thing. I will be interested to see how many tidbits you catch in the movie that are similar. I was like ...OMG... all the way through the novel. SOMEONE was reading fanfic...

Phew! I'm really glad that Harry was exposed for the fraud of a friend that he is! And they're finally engaged. Can I just say how romantic and wonderful that proposal was?? :D

Absolutely wonderful work!!:D:D I really can't wait for the final chapter!! Weddings are always the best beginning!XP XD
Mar. 29th, 2007 07:55 pm (UTC)
Oh, thank you! I was just remembering the other day how I had been trying to think of a really creative and romantic proposal - and how the restaurant get on one knee bit was the bait and switch. (SPOILER ALERT!) There's actually a scene like that in SM3 where Peter's going to propose in a swanky restaurant, and then it gets ruined (but for different reasons).

You definitely get a wedding in the next one! But not without a little bit of effort!
Mar. 29th, 2007 11:25 pm (UTC)
Oh!! But will he manage a successful proposal by the end of the movie!?? DANG IT May 4th canNOT come soon enough!!:D
Mar. 29th, 2007 03:40 pm (UTC)
Oh, wonderful! I loved the ending. Well, not the Harry part but everything before that. It was so great to see MJ get back at Enrique. That was a nice touch that tied the two movies together. The proposal was very romantic. Nicely done, Pete. And it looks like he was rewarded for his efforts.

Harry, Harry, Harry. Stop listening to your father! OK, I'm very excited for the final part of the trilogy!
Mar. 29th, 2007 07:57 pm (UTC)
Yeah, I guess the Harry part's not that wonderful an ending... but I'm evil like that, as you have learned well by now.

"Rewarded for his efforts"? LOL. Well-rewarded. :D

Next part Saturday!

To say Harry has daddy issues would be the understatement of the year, LOL.

It ended! It's bittersweet. I know it will continue but still, this fic made me a shipper *shipper* of MJ/Peter, oh are you sure there isn't a "supersraimi" in ff.net reviewing your stories? Cuz they're doing it in an effin' spider-web! And you wrote this two freakin' years ago! Psychic! I tell you... maybe you can you tell me today's lottery numbers? Pretty please? LOL

I loved it, Barb! It was awesome.

Can't wait for next part and the actual movie is almost here! YAY!
Mar. 30th, 2007 12:25 am (UTC)
Yes, poor thing. The classic father issues. Sigh. And he had such potential... oh, who am I kidding? He's ten times more interesting to me the way he is. :)

Well, no "supersraimi" has ever reviewed my fics, or anyone remotely seeming like it. But oh, god, if they did get ideas from me, I want them to know I'm absolutely available for script consulation and storyboarding for SM4, if it ever sees the light of day. :D

Behind her, she could hear the familiar thwip, thwip sound of his webbing being spun. What is he doing?

Okay, seriously? I have to admit, for an instant, I thought he was going to write 'Will you marry me?' in the web. Y'know, like 'Salutations' in Charlotte's Web? *snort* Can you tell I read way too much E.B. White as a kid? ;)

Great Pete/MJ scenes in this last part. ♥

Oh, but the Harry bit at the end?? *gulps* Way to go, your highness. That was evil.

Thanks for distracting me this evening with this final chapter. *hugs*

Can you tell I read way too much E.B. White as a kid? ;) -- Just wait 'til you read Ch. 1 of the next story... lol.

And thanks. Her highness is partly relieved, partly anxious to begin the next one! The next seems to be the fan fave, too. Hope you guys enjoy it as much!

It's nice that Peter and MJ finally sorted that out, but the end with Harry gives me doomsday shivers.

Great work on the whole thing! Not sure if I'll venture onto the next part of it.
Apr. 3rd, 2007 05:34 pm (UTC)
Aw... :'( Well, I'll miss you. But thanks for coming to read the other two! :)

So, we finally see Harry as the rat bastard that he is. At first he denied it and then ranted about Peter killing his dad. When Pete told him the truth, Harry wouldn't listen saying how could he trust someone that lied to him. If Harry was talking about Peter not letting him know that he was Spider-Man, why should he. Peter knows that people who find out that he is Spider-Man could be used against him and he wouldn't want anything to happen to Harry. Unfortunately those two men will have it out sooner or later, especially with what went on at the end of this story.

Luckily, Peter was finally able to find a way to propose to Mary Jane. Using the place where they shared their first kiss was romantic as well as how Peter gave MJ the ring and popped the question. Nicely done.
May. 26th, 2007 07:15 pm (UTC)
Peter and Harry certainly don't have an easy relationship, do they? But that makes the whole thing so much more interesting to me. :)

I was glad I could get a romantic proposal in there... I fretted about it, and it worked out all right in the end. Thanks for all the reviews!
