Is cheering myself up with BBT... *sniff*

What what what??? I'm at work so haven't watched it yet, but couldn't help clicking.
And I'm mad at BBT for trying to wedge Leonard/Penny down our throats. *pukes*

They broke up Barney and Robin. Pretty much for good, it looks like. *sad panda*

And yeah, blech, but tonight was fun until the final scene.

WHAT??? Oh--am so mad! I loved that pairing!

Here's the thing about The Rough Patch, for me.

I did not like this episode, and I did not like the way they went about breaking up Barney and Robin. It's too crazy and sitcommy to me, and I don't think it's true to either of the characters. And that's super frustrating. I mean, I ship them, too.

BUT. I think the writers got B/R together and then realized they only had a few stories. And then they realized it couldn't last forever. And then they turned it over to Chris Harris - who loves the crazy sitcommy stuff (his last ep was The Front Porch) - to end it. And lo, it was kinda stupid.

BUT. While I think The Rough Patch is the lowest point of the season so far, next week's episode is my favorite so far, partially in the way that it uses Classic Barney. And Classic Barney has been used to excellent effect in the post-Rough Patch season that I've read so far (I read the table draft of 511 this morning).

SO MY POINT. I love Robin/Barney in the flirting and the sitting-next-to-each-other-in-the-bar and the OMG-they're-perfect-for-each-other, but I think that for the most part, the writers fumbled the BroTP ball, and it's ultimately a good thing that they've hit this story beat and moved on before it got painful.

Sorry, I've just been waiting to get that out since we shot this one. I'm clearly a terrible shipper (considering this is the only couple I've ever really shipped).

Thank you SO much for your insight. It helps to have someone "on the inside" to tell me that things get better. I love them and I'm heartbroken, but I've watched the show from the pilot. I'm here for the long-haul.

It's too bad they didn't know what to do with them. Maybe they should have been creeping the comm... ;)

What up, fellow production assistant! (Although I am slaving away in the world of freelance and do not have an awesome steady job on an awesome TV show D:) IA, thank you for your insight. I was thinking pretty much the same thing, that they fumbled the ball and are trying to get on so they can get back to what makes the show great, so I'm glad there's some real person confirmation on that. I've heard there's a slap coming up, and obviously there's more Robin Sparkles in the future, so I haven't given up on the show yet -- I'm just disappointed that they seem to really have choked when it came to Barney/Robin in the first place.

Ha ha, I am in no way cool/old enough to be a PA (I'm an intern), but yeah, you've articulated what I've kind of assumed. I haven't talked to any of the writers about this, but I do feel like this ep is a turning point in the season. And there are definitely awesome things coming - slapping, singing, fake websites, the whole bit. But as a fan, I totally agree with your disappointment.

Oops, that's my bad, I misunderstood your position there... Still you be in the know way more than most. :)
Nov. 10th, 2009 03:46 am (UTC)
Oh, still, that's awesome! My internships were nowhere near as cool. *Barney-style thumbs up!* I'm even working on a spec script for that very show, so if I were an intern I would probably just die.

Can I friend you? We seem to have a lot in common!
Nov. 10th, 2009 03:50 am (UTC)
Ha ha, it's definitely awesome, I'm definitely really lucky, and I definitely shit myself daily (or, really, twice a week, when I'm there).

Sure, let's be friends! I have to warn you, I've gotten terrible at updating my LJ lately, but I still definitely keep up with my flist. :)

I don't watch the show so I have no idea what happened. But I feel your walrus pain. Or sea lion. I don't have my glasses on, I can't tell. :P
Nov. 10th, 2009 03:14 am (UTC)
They broke up my (and a large majority of the fans) OTP. </3
Nov. 10th, 2009 03:01 am (UTC)
Honestly, it's sad but I'm glad it's over, just because they were so epically fucking up Robin/Barney that I was ready for them to give it the Old Yeller. I don't know what the hell happened, but every episode since the first of the season has been a disaster to me, except maybe Robin 101. At least now HIMYM can get back to being good, even if the ship I want is gone. It wasn't there anyway. :/
Nov. 10th, 2009 03:18 am (UTC)
They weren't doing them justice, though I wasn't horribly unhappy with it. But still, they could have given them more eps to figure it out... However, if you look at becs1024 comment above (she's a production assistant on the show - we've known each other since long before this job), I think I can somewhat understand. Still heartbroken. :(
Nov. 10th, 2009 03:41 am (UTC)
(I'm actually just an intern! Shhhh!)
Nov. 10th, 2009 03:41 am (UTC)
I look at it this way: that was Barney/Robin 1.0. And it was buggy. Now we're back to the drawing board to get started on Barney/Robin 2.0! :p

*hugs tight*
Nov. 10th, 2009 03:44 am (UTC)
That definitely cheers me to think of it that way. :)
Nov. 10th, 2009 09:47 am (UTC)
Totally. My boyfriend and I were talking about it tonight and he says that ever since they got together, a lot of the funny has gone away. He thinks that Barney is really the best thing about the show so...without his usual awesome, it just kinda fell apart.
I tend to agree but I think it's more a failure of execution than of anything. I still think they are great together and I ship them almost as hard as I ship Penny/Sheldon...but that's another story. :)
Nov. 10th, 2009 11:31 am (UTC)
I'm hoping against hope this is so. They can figure out how to bring them back together later, and still keep them awesome and funny. I could point them toward a lot of fic, actually... ;D
Nov. 10th, 2009 07:40 pm (UTC)
I haven't seen it yet. Wow, I don't know what to think now. Where are they going with those two? Humm, interesting.
Nov. 10th, 2009 10:28 pm (UTC)
I have no idea where they're going... but I'm still loyal for now. I just want my BroTP BACK!
Nov. 11th, 2009 12:28 am (UTC)
I watched it a little while ago, and it may be a 'sweeps' stunt. I just hope they haven't ruined the relationship. It was pretty tough to watch them breaking up like that.
Nov. 11th, 2009 04:46 am (UTC)
My icon does a fine job of summarizing my feelings about last night's episode. >:{

It's not so much that Barney and Robin broke up that irks me...that would've made me VERY disappointed anyway, but still...what makes me ANGRY is that it was written so damn BADLY. It was insanely OOC (they're just "too awesome"?!? WHAT?!?!), some of what they said was just downright confusing (they're too much the same seemed to be a big point of why they should break up...so then, why didn't Ted/Robin work I'd like to know? Oh, WAIIIT, they were too DIFFERENT.), there was no real development from the we rock as a couple vibe from Duel Citizenship to we're MISERABLE in this episode, and what's worst of all is that outside of the B/R thing, I found almost NOTHING funny last night. I know a lot of people found things to laugh at, but I thought everything felt very silly (and not in a good way) and forced.

I'm holding out hope that maybe this is all just a sweeps plot or something. Or that they do plan for B/R endgame, and they're just going to wait on it for a season or two longer. Who knows? I'm not giving up, but it's going to be hard shipping these two from now on. :(
Nov. 11th, 2009 05:28 pm (UTC)
Yeah, that's my only hope here, that they're saving them for later. I think becs1024 is right, they couldn't find enough funny plots with them together so they ended it quickly. I think they could be hilarious together, but I'm not on the writing staff. :(
Nov. 19th, 2009 07:25 am (UTC)
The writing problem really stunned me this year because it made no sense!

All they had to do was keep writing them as the same Bros just with sex. Bros with Benefits, thinking they were "lying" as Lily put it in "Definitions". ♥

But instead they tried to turn them into Marshall/Lily Lite! :( Why?!?
