Yuletide Nominations Are Open!

Now that I've calmed down from the utter spazzy-ness of earlier (sorry Twitter people, lol), I ask you all:

I've got my Yuletide nominations in, have YOU?

Right now, it's just filling out a form to suggest the fandoms that you want to request when signups open up. Actual signups will be in a few weeks. :)

Newbies to yuletide, I am ready and willing to help you figure this out! This is my third year and I LOOOOOOOOOOOVVVVVVVE this event. :D

Right now, nominations are open. You can request 6 fandoms, things that are not as popular in fanfiction. They can also be crossovers, RPF, even music (like Rick Springfield's Jessie's Girl was a fandom in the past). If you go to yuletidetreasure.org, there is a link to the massive previous nominated fandoms list (though not all are still eligible.)

After you fill out that form, those nominations will appear on the signup form in a couple of weeks. You sign up and request 3-4 prompts, then select all the fandoms you would be willing to write for. They match you up and give you until Dec. 18th-ish to write and post the story of at least 1000 words.

Anything else?

No problem! I hope you'll do it! I really love this time of year!

*Squees a little more*

This year I nominated Ultimate Spider-man, Blue Beetle, Young Avengers, Up, Bolt, and JSA. :D

I nominated USM too! And I'll definitely volunteer to write BB, Bolt and Up!

I don't dare make a commitment to anything, but I know people love this event. That free-for-all on the leftover prompts at the end -- what's the deal on that part? Do you have to have participated in some way prior to that, or can anyone jump in at that point?

Also, how rare does a fandom need to be in order to be eligible?

Anyone can write a "New Year's Resolution" even if they didn't write for Yuletide proper. So yeah!

And basically, if there's tons of fic and multiple comms for a fandom, it is not eligible. (Supernatural, for example) But less active, brand new, and over 10 years old fandoms are. If you try to put one in and it has been deemed not eligible, you'll get an error message.

By ten years old, I assume you mean ten years off the air? I don't write for brand new fandoms as a rule -- I need enough canon to ground my fic -- but I do love a nice closed canon.
Oct. 14th, 2009 02:03 am (UTC)
Yes, 10 years off the air, or since it was last released for movies and books. :)
Oct. 14th, 2009 02:18 am (UTC)
What if I nominate a fandom and then don't sign up for the exchange? I really don't want to be making a commitment for November/December in October. Actually, I shouldn't be considering this at all, given my oh so lovely reputation. *sigh*
Oct. 14th, 2009 02:25 am (UTC)
Well, they sort of only want people who plan to participate to nominate. So if you're worried, I wouldn't do it - and just find something you want to write in the unfilled prompts later.

It is only a 1000 word story, though. You might be okay! But you know yourself best. *hugs*

I wouldn't nominate any fandoms unless I really thought I was going to participate, and I'm leaning in the direction of being afraid to commit right now, so I guess that's my answer. I assume that I can skip nominating any fandoms and then sign up to participate if I get over the fear?

(Sorry to be driving you nuts.)
Oct. 14th, 2009 02:40 am (UTC)
The first year I didn't nominate anything, just signed up based on the final list. So yes! Doing the nominations just ensures that fandoms you want will be on that list, but it isn't necessary to participate. :)

And no, not driving me crazy! I volunteered to help, right? ;)
Oct. 14th, 2009 03:06 am (UTC)
I volunteered to help, right?

Well that'll teach you.

Anyway, the only rare fandom I thought of was D.E.B.S. and I see it made last year's list without my help.

This year, I've nominated:

Galaxy Quest
Georgette Heyer - Friday's Child
Jane Austen - Persuasion
Lisa A Barnett and Melissa Scott - Armor of Light
Patricia A McKillip - the Riddle-Master series
Patricia C Wrede - Mairelon the Magician series

*dances around madly*
Oct. 14th, 2009 02:12 am (UTC)
Ah, maybe I should have said what I nommed! :D

Spectacular Spider-Man
Ultimate Spider-Man
Jonathan Coulton's songs (a set of six) -- not sure if this will be accepted though

*dances with you*
Oct. 14th, 2009 02:25 am (UTC)
They've accepted song fandoms in the past so I expect your nomination will fly. And I'm the only one, as far as I know, to nominate the Armor of Light as a fandom. Didn't get any takers for that last year but hope springs eternal!
Oct. 14th, 2009 02:28 am (UTC)
*crosses fingers for both of us*
Oct. 14th, 2009 02:26 am (UTC)
Ahh, I forgot something else - if I go back and nominate it will it cancel out my other noms?
Oct. 14th, 2009 02:29 am (UTC)
It will - so what you do is use the exact sign up name and email and readd all the ones from before as well as the new one. Then you'll be good!
Oct. 14th, 2009 02:32 am (UTC)
readd? To you mean re-enter them?
Oct. 14th, 2009 02:37 am (UTC)
Yes, re-enter the entire form exactly the same except with the new addition.
Oct. 14th, 2009 02:41 am (UTC)
I meant DO not TO. *sigh* This is what I get for trying to do ten things at once.

Thank you so much for all of your help today. Sorry again for being an airhead. LOL
Oct. 14th, 2009 02:43 am (UTC)
No prob! I be here to help!
Oct. 14th, 2009 03:03 am (UTC)
Done - thanks again. :)

ETA: My new noms are:

Indiana Jones
A League of Their Own
MASH (tv)
Northern Exposure

This is my first year doing Yuletide. I'm still trying to sort out what I want to offer. Books and movies are easy, but I'm unsure about comics. I've read most of the current run of Iron Man and the Bucky Cap era but I don't know if that's enough. I'm not touching Spidey except for the cartoons. Way too much canon, even in USM.
Oct. 19th, 2009 04:23 pm (UTC)
The first year I was very conservative about which fandoms I offered. The second year I picked anything I knew well. This year I may do anything I know even slightly. *crazy*

I love the utter randomness of the assignment you can get when you offer a lot. :) But small and conservative is probably best for the first year!

Did you nominate?
Oct. 19th, 2009 04:31 pm (UTC)
Sure did.

Baldur's Gate
Spider-Man: TAS
The Bartimaeus Trilogy
Age of Innocene
Persona 4

I've got three fandoms I know I can write, so I might stick to those and save ambition for NYR.
