Her cell phone buzzed from across the room, startling her from a light dose. She turned her blurry eyes on Jimmy in the hospital bed -- still breathing, still asleep... still comatose. By the time she stretched and got up from the uncomfortable chair, the phone had ceased to vibrate.
She lifted it idly, not really expecting what she saw -- a text message from Clark. "Surprise."
"What the hell...?" she muttered at the phone, as if he could hear all those miles back to Metropolis.
But she didn't even have time to send even a "WTF?" in reply before the door to Jimmy's room practically burst open. Chloe came into the room, Clark following close behind. Her cousin took in the scene before her - Jimmy cold and unmoving, Lois looking tired and drawn, and seemed almost as stunned as Lois was. She suddenly broke from her trance and rushed to Jimmy's side.
"Oh, Jimmy..." Chloe breathed, placing a hand on his cheek. She let it trail down the side of his face, as if she were relearning its curves. Then she looked up at Lois, eyes full of questions. "How is he doing?"
"He's stable... he's hanging in there. Jimmy's a tough guy," Lois said as gently as she could. "How are you doing, cuz?" Last she had seen, Chloe was being carried off in her wedding gown by a monster out of a B-movie.
"I'm great, I'm fine..." Chloe trailed off as she looked at her new husband.
Lois stepped back from the bed and eased over next to Clark, who had been keeping his distance. "You could have given me a little more warning, you know."
"She wanted to see him as soon as possible... I couldn't say no."
Lois' eyes narrowed and her mouth quirked up on one side. "And you couldn't have called during the drive?"
Clark looked uncomfortable and only shrugged in reply.
"Dork." She shoved him lightly on the arm. "You are filling me in on what happened ASAP... but I'm really glad you brought her." She gave him a slow smile and he returned it. The sudden butterflies she got in her stomach made her quickly avert her eyes.
To hide it, Lois looked over at Chloe again, who was whispering something to Jimmy, tears shining on her cheeks. Lois suddenly felt like an intruder on their reunion -- and the way she and Clark had left things at the wedding was weighing heavily on her mind... Ollie was right. She just needed to talk with him about it. She slipped over to the doorway, and nodded toward the hall. "Wanna get a coffee?"
