The Summer Continues...

Time to update you on happenings!

1) I finished my bigbangbigbang at just over 15K. It has the appropriately cheesy title of "StarTricked" to go with its cheesiness. :) I still have to finish revising it, but I will soon be paired with an artist/fanmixer and that is exciting!

2) Community got passed over for the Emmys (a crime!) but the Thursday marathon was amazing and the fandom is terrific. It looks like the comm may snag Gillian Jacobs for an interview soon, too!

3) SUMMER TV MARATHON STATUS:

Finished since the last update:
**New Doctor Who - I really, really enjoyed Series Five. I really, really like all three members of Team Tardis (Eleven, Amy, Rory), and that's new for me. For example:
  • Nine>Rose
  • Ten=Rose, but I wasn't madly in love
  • Martha>Ten
  • Donna>Ten, but their BFFery elevated Ten GREATLY
  • Eleven is LOVE. Amazing. Amy is perfect. Rory is a teddy bear. AND THEY GET TO GO ON MORE ADVENTURES TOGETHER, THIS IS SO EXCITING. NO CHANGE UP BETWEEN SERIES!

**Spaced - finished - Series 2 was so great. How sad it only lasted 2 series?

**Drop Dead Diva - finished/caught up for Sunday. LOVE IT. This is why it's great:
  • Brooke Elliott, who plays Jane, is amazing at playing a thin, shallow model trapped inside a brilliant plus-sized lawyer. She's bubbly, fiesty, caring.
  • I tear up practically every episode. Sure, it's on Lifetime. That's their brand, right? But even T. was getting sucked in when I was watching.
  • Jane is inspiring. I love how she shines despite the opinions of everyone around her.

In Progress:
**Black Books
  • The First Series is just okay. I had trouble finishing it.
  • But I pressed on to Series 2, and nearly watched all six in one sitting.
  • Just a few more S2, then on to S3.

About to Start:
**The IT Crowd
**(I can't decide which to do next. Help?)

STILL ON THE LIST
Cougar Town
United States of Tara
Iron Man: Armored Adventures
Party Down
Sanctuary
Primeval
Castle
No Heroics
The Mighty Boosh

Current Summer TV:
Leverage: so good this season! They are upping the shippyness and I APPROVE.
Burn Notice: not as good, though I like Jesse. He mixes things up. :)
True Blood: as WTF as ever. Still watching.
The Good Guys: SERIOUSLY, WATCH THIS SHOW. Colin Hanks! Dan Stark's mustache! 80s buddy cop movies, humor turned way up!
Louie: watched the pilot, couldn't get into it

Coming Soon:
Psych: can't wait for it to start up!
Mad Men: my interest level is growing as the premiere approaches
Covert Affairs: Going to try it
Rubicon: Going to try it

I'm really surprised at how many people seem to agree! When Ten was currently airing, it seemed like my entire Who-watching f-list loved Ten. But I think the composite of my f-list has changed quite a bit since then. :D

I loved Ten once upon a time (really, truly did -- preferred him to Nine by a long shot), but over the course of his run I became increasingly cynical and detached.

IMO it's not a bad thing to like a companion as much as you like the Doctor, but surely you shouldn't like the companions more than the Doctor, as I did with Martha and Donna. And you definitely shouldn't find the combination of Doctor and companion so toxic that you feel sorry for everyone who meets them, which is how I felt about Ten/Rose by "Journey's End". And by the time "Last of the Time Lords" rolled around I was so disgusted with Ten's arrogance and self-centeredness couldn't even bring myself to watch any more.

(All of which is not to say anything bad about David Tennant, who is a brilliant actor who did [I think] the best that anyone could do with the script and character moments he was given. I just happen to violently disagree with the direction that the Tenth Doctor's character took over the course of his run.)

S5 gave me back my joy in the Doctor as a madman with a box, and two companions who are flawed but human and lovable. It also convinced me to love River, about whom I was suspending judgment. Sure, there were a couple of eps I was meh on, but I never felt angry or disgusted after watching them. I felt like I got back the show I've been loving since I was eight years old.

So yeah, I am very very happy to know that I am not the only one who feels this way.

Leverage is great this season. What was the last one you saw?

And you haven't? MAN, I loved season 5. Eleven is amazing. I love the freshness of his outlook. I promise not to spoil more in this comment, so I hope you skipped over my Who thoughts above...

Haven't seen any of Leverage this season. We've been in the middle of the move - so we've had a severe lack of tv lOl.

and nope didn't read any of the Who comments. I'm hoping to catch up in the next few weeks.

Way to go on your bigbang fic!! :D I hope you'll post a link here when it goes up? I want to read the end of that. hehehe!

Oh, I definitely will! Sorry I haven't been online for writing - I think finishing this fic made me averse to daily writing for a while. But I want to get back to it soon. :)

Castle! Go for Castle next! Nathan Fillion = LOVE LOVE LOVE.

Also am I blind or is White Collar not on your list? IS THERE A REASON FOR THAT BESIDES OVERSIGHT?!? Because it should be on everyone's list.

I'm so glad you loved Spaced. It will always be one of my favorites and it NEVER gets old. I could watch it 38943948 times and never tire of it.

Castle won - I started acquiring it today! :D

And you are not blind. I watched the first three eps of White Collar, and it just wasn't exciting me. I know everyone loved it more and more as it went along, and I've already promised other people that I'd give it a second shot (I kept my icon), but I'm waiting until I try new stuff first. :)

Castle!!! *squees* Love that show so VERY much!

I watched "Drop Dead Diva" last year but forgot to pick it up this year I may have to wait until later (i.e. after it comes out on DVD and order it from Netflix) as I really don't think I have the time for it now between writing fic, practicing for a 100p play with only six characters (mine has two monologues! 0_0), work and signing up for a class on top of everything else (and I'm paying every single cent of it with my own cash so I BETTER do well this time!).

I just couldn't get into it after Ten left. I did sort of watch the early DW when I was younger but I don't really have that much invested in it so it was time for me to turn that one off for a while.

I'm going to start on Castle this evening! :)

DDD has been just as great in the first eps of S2. So whenever you can pick it back up, I think you'll like it.

I'm finding that people who really loved Ten aren't as into Eleven, but those who just liked him (or found him annoying) adore Eleven. I'm in the second camp (liked, found him annoying occasionally). I'm not a fan of angst, so, that probably explains it.

Sorry I haven't been online for writing - I think finishing this fic made me averse to daily writing for a while. But I want to get back to it soon. :)

That's all right, for me that "Waiting on the Muse" one also doubles as my "acting" avatar these days. I'm finding the process of parsing my characterization very similar to that of writing a story/fanfic. We'll have to see how desperate I am for writing at some point.

TEAM TARDIS FTW

I love everything about Eleven. He does not have the sad post-Time War angst like Nine and Ten, and is not emotionally attached to those companions he left behind. He's adorable and fun, but knows when to be series. In short, fantastic.

I suggest White Collar. I really think you would enjoy it. (do you watch it? Idk). I'll tell you about it anyway.

The beginning stuff: So there's this FBI agent named Peter and this thief named Neal. Peter catches Neal but then Peter needs Neal's help. Then the show goes from there. It's really fun and the characters are awesome and witty. You may think "oh no not another cop/FBI/crime show" but it's really different and fresh. And season two starts Tuesday :D

I love the lack of sadness in Eleven. I'm just less and less into angst these days, so he totally hit the spot.

About White Collar: I watched the first three eps, and it just wasn't exciting me. I know everyone loved it more and more as it went along, and I've already promised other people that I'd give it a second shot (I kept my icon), but I'm waiting until I try new stuff first. :)

I like angst but at the end there Ten just kept going on and on and on and I was ready for him to regenerate.

Oh okay. I understand how it may not be for everyone, I just love the bromance in it lol. But yeah, if you get bored one day, you might be one of those that likes it as it goes on.

Um, have you ever seen Being Human? *trying to think of other shows*

Jul. 12th, 2010 02:21 am (UTC)
I will probably pick it back up, just later. :)

And yes, I watch Being Human! I'm looking forward to S3 starting - I even watch it (and some other BBC shows) live via a stream when I can.

Yay! I'm glad we agree! Looking forward to watching Leverage tonight. :)

I'd suggest Chuck first. Because that show is one of my FANDOMS (in all caps, of course). I decided to start Castle today, though, so we could maybe watch together? ;)

Loved loved loved Spaced. I was rewatching the paintball scene on youtube and funny how much of it reminded me of Community!

I totally had Community on the mind during the Spaced paintball ep! They didn't go "all the way" but it was close. Amazing that Dan Harmon hadn't seen Spaced until after wrapping S1.

Oh, you have all the same opinions on Doctor Who as me (well, except that I don't like Rory). I love it when friends of mine catch up on things that I love and have all the same opinions on it as me when they're done. ♥

Jul. 11th, 2010 10:58 pm (UTC)
I've seen you and @captaindove talk about how you don't like Rory, and how you feel alone in that opinion. Tell me, what is it that bothers you? I'm interested to know.

BUT YES, it's awesome when people are in sync with fandom opinions! I find most Lois-fans have many similar fannish tastes, as strange as that may be. :)

Oh, cool! Here's a little more on the premise:

Deb, an aspiring model, dies at the same time as Jane, a brilliant but unhappy lawyer. When Deb goes to heaven, her clerk sees that she's a "zero": no good deeds and no bad deeds - he's never seen that. She notices a little sign about a "return" button and presses it without permission, and that sends her back to earth - but in Jane's body.

Basically, Deb's in this totally different body, with a whole life and set of relationships she doesn't understand. She has all of the learning, but none of the memories. So she can function as a lawyer, and she's actually good at it because she has this innate drive to succeed. But she keeps running into problems with people who know Jane and she has to navigate it without seeming insane.

She tells her best friend from her old life (who believes her) and the clerk gets assigned to her as her guardian angel, so she's not alone with the secret. One complication is that her former boyfriend/almost fiance starts to work for her lawfirm, so she has to deal with still loving him while he's grieving for her and moving on.

Anyway, it's a really different show than I've recommended in the past. I had trouble acquiring it, though, so let me know in a PM if you need help! :)
