Five Questions Meme

Leave me a comment with "SRS BZNS - WHERE'S MY POPSICLE MARGARITA" in the subject line.

I'll respond by asking you five questions so I can get to know you better.
Update your journal with the answers to the questions.
Include this explanation in the post and offer to ask other people questions

chickadilly gave me:

1.) What was the first thing you ever fangirled?
2.) You've traveled and lived in some very interesting places. Out of everything you've seen and done what would you say is your favorite travel memory?
3.) Do you have a philosophy of life?
4.) How did you get into music teaching? Have you always been a musician?
5.) How much fun are we going to have at Comic Con? :D :D :D

1.) What was the first thing you ever fangirled?
Okay, so this was a LOT harder to answer than I expected. I was a fan of many things as a child growing up, but I never really got obsessive until college. Probably the first thing was music. I determined one year that I would get almost every Christian rock album (and a ton of the pop and inspirational) released that year. And I did pretty well - which is how I was introduced to some of my favorite bands to this day. But this was pre-internet, and so I did it alone, with only a friend here or there to share squee with.

After I got a job in 1994, I started to obsess about Looney Tunes cartoons - collecting every single one of the shorts from 1930-1964. I got very close - probably 97%. And the way I completed my collection was through the internet and newsgroups. alt.animation.warnerbros, I believe. This was my first interaction with other fans who really loved the same thing to the same degree. We discussed Animaniacs (new at the time) and the shows of the studio at the time to death. In fact, the icon I'm using comes from an episode (bad quality, but still fun) that made us LAUGH LIKE CRAZY, since it was totally directed right at us (I think they even quoted conversations, IIRC)

I also participated some in the Lois and Clark listserv and the Wheel of Time website, but in some ways I didn't know I was in FANDOM until I posted my first Spider-Man story in 2005.

2.) You've traveled and lived in some very interesting places. Out of everything you've seen and done what would you say is your favorite travel memory?
Whoo, also hard! I think it was probably driving 2.5 hours to Tokyo and sightseeing by car. Honestly, most tourists (and most Japanese people) see the city via subway and train. But there was nothing like being the lone gaijin (foreigners) putzing about the city in our tiny hatchback. You experience the city as a real place -- not as a place of wonder and incomprehensibility -- and I'll never trade that.

3.) Do you have a philosophy of life?
Ack, you ask hard questions, girl! I guess I try to treat others right, to love as much as I can, and enjoy life. I definitely have a long way to go in all those areas. I'm not a confrontational person at all, so when someone disagrees with something I do, I tend to explain why I did something as calmly as I can and drop it. But it always makes me feel like a) I should have said nothing or b) I didn't do enough. Sometimes both. And if someone keeps pushing, then I explode in a white-hot volcano of rage (HULK SMASH!). Not good at all. You probably think that was a tangent, but I often feel like this aspect of my personality stops me from being able to fully live out the philosophy of life I have.

4.) How did you get into music teaching? Have you always been a musician?
Yes. I've been singing, performing, playing the piano and writing music since I was little. In junior high, I thought maybe I wanted to be a computer programmer and just do music on the side, but in high school I had a band director who was a new teacher, and he had such a hard time that I decided I could do better! LOL, high school hubris. But, hey, I majored in music education in college, and I've never regretted it.

5.) How much fun are we going to have at Comic Con? :D :D :D
THE EASIEST ONE TO ANSWER! A HUGE AMOUNT OF FUN! And you can even ditch me while I wait in line for and attend the Big Bang Theory panel. Or risk insane amounts of babble as I stare at Jim Parsons and his hands. :D

Anyone not done this that wants to play?

HEe - I didn't intend to post challenging questions. I guess it just sort of happened that way. But HAY THINKING IS GOODOOOOD! :D

Feel free to hit me with some challenging questions of your own if you want. I like dis meme.

I really enjoyed reading this. I'm especially jealous of your travels - and that story about driving in Japan is very interesting. I think I'd like to visit there one day.

That's interesting about you and confrontation. You always seem to take things in stride - in fact I've envied that about you! If I've ever done anything that bothered you I apologize for it right now. <3333's

WE ARE GOING TO HAVE THE MOST FUN AT COMIC CON EVAR!!! YAY!!! :D :D :D

Um, if I think of good questions, I will! :)

You should definitely visit Japan if you can. It's a great blend of the familiar and the alien. :)

Yeah, the nice thing about the internet is that you can easily cool off before posting anything crazy (not that it stops some people, but hey). Whenever I have to reply to something confrontational I usually spend a while thinking of my response, rather than firing back. I'm not as quick on my feet face-to-face.

And usually once I'm past dealing with the confrontation, I can move on. Rarely do I worry about it anymore, unless I fear more confrontation from that person.

WE ARE! :D :D :D :D I'm almost caught up on Dollhouse for you, too! Watching the finale today.

What do you think of Dollhouse? I like it but I know some folks hate it because of the creepy factor. It IS creepy but I think that's part of the point of the show - I don't get the impression it's not aware of it as some of it's detractors claim it is.

*twirls you*

After the 2rd/3rd episode, I really started getting into it! I watched all of them within a couple of days. And I agree. The show presents the concept impartially, making all of the characters multi-dimensional. Ballard is the "this is wrong" side which the audience agrees with, but it isn't made that simple. You can see the reasoning, even if you don't agree, with most of the characters involved.

I particularly liked the questions of slavery/free will, desire/need, identity, consequences, etc. presented -- there are no easy answers. My favorite episode was "Needs" (the escape plot), though some others were pretty awesome, too. I do wish I hadn't been spoiled for the identity of Alpha and Whiskey, though! :( That would have made it much more fun.

I lived in Japan for 3 years, and we went to Tokyo 2-3 times. The time by car was my absolute favorite. ♥

1) What was the first thing YOU ever fangirled?
2) How did you choose your college?
3) How do you feel about your hometown/state?
4) Where have you never traveled that you'd love to go?

1) X-Men!
2) Love: entertainment, great storytelling, great art, original American art form. Hate: bad stories, $4 cover price, bad art, hype for lame stories
3) I love New Hampshire soooo much. People think it's weird
4) Ireland
5) Tenure!
htbthomas
Jun. 29th, 2009 02:04 pm (UTC)
1) Which version of X-Men got you first?

2) I pretty much like and hate comics for the same reasons. :)

3) Never been to New Hampshire - but I've always wanted to!

4) Ireland is the most popular result on this question! I'd love to go, too.

5) Oo, tenure. Doesn't exist here, sadly. :(

1. It's embarrassing but I was totally into the cartoon! A friend of my sister's was really into comic books so he got me a bunch.

2. :)

3) It's the bestest ever.

4) I've been to England. My family is Irish so I feel like I need to go.

5) Really? What state are you in?

Hey, cartoons are often gateway drugs. No shame! I write fanfic for one, for goodness sake. :D

I'm in Ohio. But it was also true in Texas, and I think California. I have a feeling there are less states with tenure than without.

Re: SRS BZNS - WHERE'S MY POPSICLE MARGARITA
Haha! Is okay. Maybe you can link me to that meme. I might want to play. :P

1.) Voltron: Defender of the Universe started it all for me. I had no idea the show came from Japan, but as soon as I found out I thought it was cool. The more I started to see shows that had the funny animation (ie, the mouths not moving to the lines and such) the more I realized a lot of them had great plots. After Voltron, I got into an anime known here as Robotech and fell hard for the sci-fi based storyline. The rest, as they say, is history.

2.) This is all my Dad's fault. Really. While I was still in the womb, he was reading me articles from Sports Illustrated. He also had figurines of Hall of Fame players (Willie Mays is the one I remember the best) sitting in his room along with dozens of baseball books, and I can remember asking him who the players were and how to play baseball and bla bla bla... then he showed me SportsCenter and I watched all the baseball highlights I could get my hands on. I guess you could say that my Dad's passion for the game is the reason I love it, because without it, I'm not sure I would be a sports fanatic in the first place. Football is awesome too, and basketball is fun to play, but baseball? Baseball will always remind me of my Dad.

3.) It's never boring around here. In the summer we're worried about tornadoes, blizzards in winter, foliage in the fall... Spring Training in the spring. :) But I also love that so much agriculture comes from this state, and I'm really happy I grew up here. I don't think I would respect farmers in a city as much as I do here. It might be the Midwesterner in me, but I really don't think city-folk could survive without us.

4.) I HAVE NO IDEA. O_o Maybe Batman, but he's a little too broody to me. Aquaman, maybe? I don't know.

5.) Actually, I would love to travel all over America and see what this country has to offer. I know it's a beautiful place, but I want to see it with my own eyes. Japan, of course. I really want to visit Ireland and Scotland and get in touch with my ancestry. Oh, and New Zealand. I'm a sucker for mountains, I've discovered. :D
