Come Participate!

You know I'm a terrible sucker for challenges (oh, woe is me), and even though I made a New Year's Resolution not to join any new ones, my oldest and dearest fic friend mark_clark is hosting a:

♥ Spider-Man Fanfic Challenge ♥

and he hasn't had much interest yet. Please come sign up! It only needs to be 100 words minimum (though it can be 6000 maximum) and can be any version of the Spider-Books, movies or cartoons! And there's no specific due date, any time in the next few months.

I know several of you all are interested in Spider-Man at least slightly, and he needs more participation!! *begs very, very nicely with lots of yummy coffee or whatever your vice is*

How do I let you get me involved in these things? First yuletide and now this. :)

Since one of the things I have resolved to do to make my life a happier place to be is write more and I have seen the movies and read some of the comics (although not in a very long time, I must admit), I went ahead and committed to a drabble. I might write something longer, but I make no promises. Yuletide did teach me that sometimes it is fun to go outside our comfort zones for material. :)

Well, I don't know what I do, but I'm glad whatever it is!! ♥

Yes, I agree that going outside of comfort zones is very fun.

Sorry; I'm not cool with challenges where non-canon het is allowed but slash isn't. And it's not even that I would want to write slash for such a challenge - it's the principle of the thing.

Well, that's okay. That's his preference, so if you can't do it, I understand. :)

Mm, quite. Do you think he would find it of interest to know that he's lost at least one person through perceived heterosexism, or would that just start a pointless flame war? Because I totally grok that people have their preferences, but I can think of several ways off the top of my head to do a Spider-Man fic challenge without slash that doesn't come off as exclusionary. He did seem like a nice guy when we talked during the Heroes chats.

He is a nice guy. He might be interested, so if you have a suggestion that would be more inclusive, I can run it by him. :)

Well, the three that are most obvious:

1. Gen-only challenge. No romance at all.
2. Het-only challenge. Canon or non-canon pairings, as long as they're M/F, no gen.
3. Canon-only challenge. Stories based heavily in canon, gen or canon het only. This would be tricky as the line around "based on canon" would have to be clearly drawn (do what-ifs count as canon? looking for "deleted scene" stories, or the exact opposite? etc), but it could also give people who want to participate but who don't have much inspiration food for thought.

Voila, no slash, and without targeting it as an exception in the rules of an otherwise extremely inclusive challenge!

I will send these suggestions on! He hasn't made this challenge public beyond his own f-list and now mine, so if he decides to, this would be a good starting place. :)

I appreciate you hearing out my concerns and passing them on! :)

Mark made a couple changes to the challenge:

Does that work?
